Peters Claims Junior Match Play

Posted: August 5th, 2016

Saegertown junior outlasted Prep sophomore Patrick Kelly by a score of 3 and 1 to claim the 2016 Erie Sport Store Junior Match Play Championship. Peters started posted three birdies on his round including one on 15 when Kelly seemed to be poised to square the match after falling behind by 3 holes but then claiming 13 and 14 to put pressure on Peters. The two traded pars on 16 and then Peters claimed the title when Kelly’s drive on 17 found the left hazard. Peters went wire to wire if there is such a thing in matchplay as he was the number one seed after Monday’s qualifier.

In girls’ competition, Walnut Creek 8th grader Natalie Brosig needed extra holes not only to gain a birth in match play but also in both of her matches. She defeated Villa sophomore and first seeded Kymmy Henry to in 19 holes to reach the final and then bested Fort Leboeuf’s Syd Worley by the same score to claim the title.

The boys B flight and Boys 10 to 12 flight were far less dramatic as Mercyhurst Prep senior Carl Palotas race away with the B flight defeating Iroquois sophomore Justin Bonniger, 8 and 7. Kyle Westfall claimed the youngest boy’s group by way of an 8 and 6 decision over Ryan Fiscus.

Kupniewski Three-Peats (trademark: Pat Riley)

Posted: July 8th, 2016

Mercyhurst’s Chris Kupniewski claimed the 2106 Match Play Championship on Sunday by way of a 2up win over Kahkwa’s Mike Garcia. It marks the third Match Play title in as many years for Kupniewski who started his streak in 2014 when he defeated Garcia at Lawrence Park Golf Club. After going down one on the opening hole, Kupniewski’s steady play coupled with a few missed opportunities for Garcia allowed the match to be squared through 13. Kupniewski would take his first lead of the day on 16 when Garcia’s second shot on the par five was pulled out of bounds allowing Chris to take the hole with a par. It looked like Garcia would square the match on 17 when a Kupniewski lag putt came up will short above the hole but a clutch 10 footer would all but seal the match. The Kupniewski contingent held its collective breath when the Laker Senior-to-be nearly failed to clear the ravine on 18. His drive would land tenuously, but safely on the front edge of the green forcing Garcia to need birdie to tie. Garcia’s drive would miss left and an aggressive chip at the hole did not find safe harbor in the cup allowing Kup to safely 2 putt for the 2 up victory.

The men return to action Monday July 11th with the 36-hole Mid-Amateur Championship, hosted by Culbertson Hills Golf Club.
