16 year old Austin Romeo of the Kahkwa Club is the champion of the 89th EDGA Amateur Championship. Romeo followed up a brilliant round of 68 on Saturday with an equally as brilliant 68 on Sunday for a 3 round total of 207.

Romeo’s three round total of 9 under par bettered the 54 hole record by 5 shots. The previous record was established by Tom Amendola in 2002 at Lake View. Additionally, both Tim Dunlavey (1989) and Brett Kieffer (1980) shot 4 under when the event was conducted at 3 different courses.

Although the final margin was 4 strokes the contest was closer than that. Runner up Drew Deimel trailed by just one shot with three holes to play. A birdie on 16 by Romeo and two closing bogies for Deimel accounted for the final margin. Deimel closed with an even par 72 and a three round total of 5-under 211. Mike Wolfe fashioned a final round 70 and finished 3rd at 213.

Three players tied for fourth, Cameron Zbrzeznj (77-218), Rick Carlotti (71-218) and Bob Paris (71-218). Ted Grassi III was alone in 7th with 71-219 and Dave Spitzer was solo 8th with 73-220. Troy Hassenplug (75-222) and Cory Smith (73-222) rounded out the top 10.

Zach Bird succeeds his younger brother Nick as champion of the Jim Martin Memorial EDGA Junior Stroke Play.

Zach quickly erased a two shot deficit when first round leader Greg Podufal made a double bogey on the second hole. Bird would then use birdies on 7 and 8 to take the lead at the turn by 2. Podufal then birdied 10 and 11 to again forge a tie before Bird returned the favor by birdieing the 12th. Both would par the final 6 holes leaving Bird with a one shot advantage. Bird ended with 68-139, Podufal 71-140.

Whispering Woods’ Cameron Zbrzeznj match Bird’s 68 for low round of the day, his two day total of 141 was good for third. Meanwhile, Junior Match Play champion Evan Watkins, after a slow start on the front, made birdies on 8, 10, 11, 12, and 13 to get to even par and just one off the lead but a double on 15 ended his hopes of the EDGA Junior “double.” He finished with an even par 70 and a two day total of 142 and finished 4th.

Garrett Rodgers 73-146, Robert Duran 75-148, Defending Champion Nick Bird 73-150 and Jimmy Lasher 74-150 rounded out the top 8 and all received prizes for their efforts.

Other age group prizes went to:
Age 12-13 – Andrew Britton 156, Sean Sculley 172
Age 14-15 – David Rinderle 151, Mike Capotis 154, Hunter Cunningham 160
Age 16-17 – Andy Milloy 151, Scott Klein, Mike Kloecker, AJ Pinto 153

All prizes can be claimed by visiting the Gospel Hill pro shop.

Thank you again to Heidi Utley for providing the championship awards in memory of Jim Martin, a long time and faithful EDGA volunteer.

Rain interrupted the 2009 EDGA Mid-Am at the Lake Shore CC on Thursday July 23th so much that the event had to be trimmed to 18 holes and time for 18 holes was just about the window of opportunity. The starting times were delayed by 2 hours to allow the course to drain and then, almost immediately upon completion of play another deluge struck. That rain caused a delay in the pending playoff between Lake Shore combatants Bob Paris and Marty Simonsen who finished the day tied with rounds of 3-under par 69’s.

Another small window opened and the player did battle on the first hole at the Shore in sudden death format. Unfortunately for Paris, it took just about 1 shot to send his title hopes to their death as his tee shot ended up out of bounds. Simonsen would play the hole safely and cautiously and his bogey 5 was good enough to capture the trophy.

Ron Coleman, seeking an unprecedented 3rd straight title had those dreams dashed when an untimely bogey at the 18th left him 1 shot out of the playoff. He finished alone in 3rd with 70. Senior champion Rick Carlotti was at even par 72 and alone in 4th. Cory Smith and Sal Vella, Jr. tied for fifth with 73’s while EDGA Match Play runner-up Ted Grassi, III was 7th with 74. Rounding out the prize list were Whispering Woods’ David Hewett and Mark Noce who both shot 75’s.

For tee times Click here.

Last year Ron Coleman successfully defended his title in the EDGA Mid-Am Championship.Trailing by Troy Hassenplug by 3 strokes with 4 holes to play Coleman notched birdies on holes 15 and 16 while Hassenplug madge bogies on 16 and 17. Both would par 18 giving Coleman the 1 stroke victory.

Cory Smith was third at 148 (73-75), David Hewett fourth at 152 (78-74) and Bob Paris rounded out the top five with 153 (76-77).

In the Amateur there have been 9 repeat champions, Ellery Tarbell (2005-06), Joe Cassano (93-94), Tim Dunlavey (89-90), Brett Kieffer (80-81), Gene George (74-75), Dave Hambly (65-66), Harold Cloyd (42-43), Lou Geisler (40-41), and W.W. Fisher (27-28).

The match was fairly closely contested on a beautiful summer day at Lake View CC. Coleman would use back-to-back birdies on each 9 the change the momentum of the match. On the front he birdied no’s 5 & 6 to turn a 1 hole deficit into a 1 hole lead and then on the back would use birdies on no’s 13 and 14 to move the match to dormie and basically take it out of Grassi’s reach with 4 holes to play. Grassi played steady as he has all week but could only muster 2 holes, both Coleman 3-putts. Coleman finished his 15 holes at 2-under par.

The finals’ scorecard :
