It took just one more hole, what was in reality the 3rd playoff hole, 5 days removed from the first two holes, Ellery Tarbell dropped a 10 foot birdie putt to claim the 88th EDGA Amateur Championship. This is his 3rd title, adding to back-to-back titles he claimed in 2005 and 2006.

Earlier in the week, mother nature gave the contestants in the 88th EDGA Amateur Championship a break, but just a small one as the remaining 21 players completed play Monday afternoon.

At the conclusion of the 54 hole event, 3 players still remained tied at a score of one-over par 217. 2000 Amateur Champion David Hewett of Whispering Woods (72), 2005-2006 Amateur Champion Ellery Tarbell of Lake View (72), and 2005 Match Play Champion Gregor Orlando of Kahkwa (71) would need to go extra holes.

Orlando remained steady throughout the completion of the round although he experienced some errant tee shots in his round of 71. Tarbell and Hewett, playing in the final group behind Orlando would play the 18th tied and one back respectively. Hewett drained a 12 foot birdie putt to forge a tie and then watched as Tarbell joined them with a nice putt of his own. Tarbell’s putt was for par after missing the green to the right and completed a very difficult up and down.

A playoff would ensue in the falling darkness. Hewett’s second shot would come up short and lead to a bogey as Orlando and Tarbell would par and move to the second playoff hole. Both players would hit good shots and leave good birdie opportunities but neither could convert to claim the title. At that point lightning literally struck and the skys opened up with a downpour which put and end to golf for the day.

Orlando and Tarbell will return to Lawrence Park on Saturday at 11:30 to continue the playoff.

Nick Bird didn’t think he had much of a chance of to win the Jim Martin Memorial EDGA Junior Stroke Play tournament after shooting a 77 Wednesday at Green Meadows.

But to Bird’s delight the 5-over par score was good enough to give him a one-stroke win over first-round leader Greg Podufal and Garrett Rodgers. “I didn’t think 77 was going to do it today, but it ended up all right,” said Bird, who finished 36 holes with a 2-over 146 total, including a 3-under 69 in the first round.

Podufal, who scorched Green Meadows with a 5-under 67 on Tuesday, was plagued by putting problems in the second round and posted an 80 to finish at 147. Garrett, 15, had a final round 75 to match Podufal at 147. “I just didn’t make any putts,” Podufal, 16, said. A double-bogey 6 on the 18th hole sealed Podufal’s fate.

Bird said he didn’t do anything spectacular in the second round. “I made the putts I needed to and I didn’t make many mistakes,” he said. Zac Bihler, who the EDGA Junior Match Play Championship in June at Elk Valley, carded the best score of the second round with an even-par 72 to complete 36 holes in fourth place at 149.

Zac Bihler got just what he wanted Friday in the finals of the EDGA Junior Match Play Championship at Elk Valley Golf Course – an early lead.

Bihler bolted to a 3-up lead just five holes into the match on his way to a 3-2 victory over Cathedral Prep teammate Pat Murawski. Bihler won the third, fourth and fifth holes and Murawski was never able to get closer than 2 down the rest of the match.

“It feels a lot better to get ahead early and I play better when I’m ahead,” Bihler said. A tap-in birdie on No.9 enabled Murawski to cut Bihler’s lead to 2 up, but the twosome halved five straight holes before Bihler secured the victory with a routine par 5 on No. 16 after Murawski chunked a chip shot.

“I feel pretty good, but I’m surprised I won,” Bihler said. “Early in the season I wasn’t hitting the ball that well, but my game came around in time.”

Poor putting plagued Murawski through the first nine holes. He needed 20 putts on the front side. He three-putted the first hole and missed a four-foot birdie putt on the second. He easily could have been 2 up after two holes. “If I could have capitalized on the first two holes it might have changed the complexion of the match,” Murawski said. “But if I had to lose I’m glad it was to Zac. He’s a great teammate and played well.”

Dave Rinderle claimed the First Flight title with a 1-up win over Greg Podufal. Birdies on four of the first six holes helped Rinderle, a student at Walnut Creek Middle School, claim a 3-up advantage that he maintained through 14 holes. It looked like Rinderle would close out the match when he chipped in for a birdie a No.15, but Podufal did the same to remain in contention. Birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 allowed Podufal to cut Rinderle’s lead to 1 up, but Podufal missed an eight-foot par-saving putt on No.18 that would have tied the match.

Applying great skill and consistency, Ron Coleman captured the 2008 EDGA Match at Downing GC. defeating Cory Smith 7&5. Coleman is the first local linkster in history to capture 3 consecutive EDGA “Majors.” (Am or Match). He now becomes the Tiger of sorts as he approaches the record of 6 majors shared by Tom Amendola, Dave Ciacchini, and Brett Keiffer.

Ron started quickly in the final match with birdies on 1, 3 and 7, good enough for a 5-up lead at that point. Smith stuck his tee shot to 3 feet on the par 3 8th to cut the lead to 4. It was the only hole he would win in the match and was his only bright spot. Coleman countered with a birdie on 10, won 11 with a par and then birdied the par 5 13th to close out the match, he was 4-under par for the day.

A player may obtain distance information by using a device that measures distance only. However, if, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance-measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect his play (e.g., gradient, wind-speed, temperature, etc.), the player is in breach of Rule 14-3, for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional functions are actually used.”
