In a very well played match, Mike Kloecker of LP defeated Cameron Zbrzeznj of Erie 2 up in the finals of the EDGA Junior Match Play which was contested Friday June 25th at Gospel Hill GC.

The championship, which was a battle of the two low qualifiers, was filled with excitement and momentum swings. Zbrzeznj held a 2 up lead after 8 but lost the ninth to turn 1up. He would quickly rebound with a birdie on ten to regain his two up lead. He followed that up with an eagle 2 on the eleventh but, unfortunately that wasn’t good enough to gain a hole as BOTH players holed their second shots for eagle and the hole was halved. Kloecker then cut the lead in half with a birdie on 12. After a couple of tied holes Kloecker’s birdie on 15 squared the match.

Kloecker birdied again on 17 and held the lead playing the final hole. Zbrzeznj missed the 18th green and, when he failed to get it up and down the hole and the match were conceded to Kloecker.

In the first flight Alex Shindledecker clipped Nick Hayes 2 up.

The Ron Coleman reign continues as he captured yet another EDGA major with a sound 4&3 defeat of David Hewett in the 38th EDGA Match Play championship. Coleman also becomes the all-time leader in EDGA majors with 7 (5 Match and 2 Amateur) surpassing Brett Kieffer (3,3) David Ciacchini (5,1) and Tom Amendola (3,3) and is tied with David Ciacchini as the all-time match play king with 5 victories.

The match was close most of the way with Hewett gaining a one up advantage with a birdie on 3. Coleman would win #4 after an errant Hewett tee shot, and then #7 with a birdie and then #8 after another errant tee shot by the runner up. Hewett would cut that lead back to 1 on 10 but Coleman would reclaim the 2 up lead after Hewett found trouble down the left side of the 12th. Coleman closed out the match with a par on 14 and a birdie on 15 for the 4&3 victory.

This was Hewett’s 6th runner up finish (3 match, 3 amateur). Coleman also continued to build on his match winning streak which now sits at 20. Also along the way Hewett became the leader in match play appearances with 30, surpassing the previous mark by Tom Amendola of 29.
