Playoffs? We’re talking about Playoffs???

Posted: June 21st, 2017

Playoffs ruled the day at today’s conclusion of the Erie Sport Store Junior Stroke Play Championship at Country Meadows Golf Course in Venango, PA. In all, three of the five age groups had to be decided via extra holes, and in one case, it was three players vying for the trophy. The 2016 Junior Match Play Champion, Ryan Peters, made it back to back junior majors when he bested Mark Majewski and Alec Hite in a playoff for the Boys 16 and Older division. Majewski was eliminated after the first playoff hole and Peters shut the door on the second versus Hite.

In the girls 16 and older division, it was Villa’s Kymmy Henry winning in a playoff against Tori Berlin.

The final playoff saw Braden Hilditch better Kyle Westfall in the boys 10 to 12 age group.

The final two divisions saw much less drama as 2016 Girls Match Play Winner, Natalie Brosig, ran away from the Girl’s 15 and Under division with a pair of matching rounds of 82 enroute to a 21 stroke victory.

Finally, the round of the day belonged to Isaiah Swan who blistered the boys 13 to 15 age group with a phenomenal round of three under par 69. His round put him 5 stroke ahead of Zach Henry, earning the division trophy.

Kupniewski Captures Amateur Championship

Posted: August 14th, 2016

Chris Kupniewski sweeps the summer “majors” as the Mecryhurst University senior took home top honors at the 2016 Erie Sport Store Amateur Championship. His final round matched his tournament total as Kupniewski posted the only sub-par cumulative score of the tournament, three under par. Playing with a hot putter, Kupniewski birdied both par threes on the back nine enroute to a 3 shot victory over familiar foe Mike Garcia. Garcia tied former Meadville standout and East Tennessee State University freshman to be Zach Ford who shared the lead with Kupniewski as late as the 14th hole. Both Garcia and Ford finished the tournament at even par. Mike Newcomer was one behind and the leader coming into Sunday, Cory Smith, finished the tournament at +2, good for a fourth place finish, tying with Penn State Behrend’s Shawn Sculley.

The final prize pool for the tournament is being determined with merchandise credit available at the Lawrence Park pro shop by Wednesday. All players who played Sunday will receive some amount of merchandise credit.
