Packed Leaderboard Enters Final Round of Amateur

Posted: August 17th, 2024

Alex Weir (72-70) and Evan Rowane (71-71) enter tomorrow’s final round tied for the lead at 2 under par. Weir is no stranger to that position, having finished runner up in 2021 and 2022. In 2021, the last time the event was hosted by Lake View, he lost in a playoff. Rowane has been there before as well, making a run in 2019 at Downing on the back nine, ultimately finishing 3rd. Their playing partner for the final round is the defending champion, Tyler Cozad (72-71), who sits at one under par. Cozad has titles in 2017, 2019 and 2023 and is just the 6 player to attempt to capture a 4th EDGA Amateur. Only Ellery Tarbell accomplished that feat with his victory in 2011.

The penultimate group is right on their heels as two of those players are also at 1 under par. First round co-leader Mike Marsico (69-74) is one of those contenders. The 2024 Lawrence Park club champ is making his first appearance in the final round of the Amateur. Sean Sculley (69-74), another of the first round co-leaders is also at one under. He already owns an EDGA Major, the 2017 Match Play Championship. Sean’s best Am finish was 5th, the year before his Match Play title. They are joined by Matt Barto (76-69) who also owns a Match Play title (2022) and has a 4th place finish in 2020. Matt’s 69 was one of three sub 70 rounds on the day. 4-time EDGA Major Champion Drew Deimel follow up his round one 80 with a 5-under par 67 while Phil Pedano performed similarly, improving from 78 to 68. Pedano is 9th, Deimel 11th.

In addition to Barto at +1 is 2024 EDGA Match Play Champion Mike Wolfe and Gannon freshman Mattia Parrini. Wolfe has finished 3rd in the last 3 Am’s and also has a 2nd and 4th in 2018 and 2019. Completing the EDGA  Major double is rare, having only been accomplished 3 times, twice by Ron Coleman (2003 and 2007) and for the first time in 1976 by Dale Loeslein. Wolfe has that opportunity tomorrow.

The top 10 is rounded out by Pendano and Rasmus Seppanen, a Gannon junior. Both players are at +2.

The field was cut to the low 24 and ties. Those 27 players tee off tomorrow morning starting at 11:00am for their final 18 holes of this 54-hole championship.
