Breckin Taylor crowned as 2025 EDGA Match Play Champion

Posted: June 15th, 2025

Breckin Taylor had not had a match cross back to the north side of route 5 (to the 16th hole) at Lake Shore and his domination continued in the finals as he defeated the defending champion, Mike Wolfe soundly 4&3.

Taylor opened the match with 2 birdies to go 2 up and then lost his first hole of the day when Wolfe birdied the par 3 fifth. Taylor’s lead would grow to three when Wolfe three-putted on both the sixth and seventh greens. Both players recorded birdies on both the 8th and 9th holes allowing Taylor the retain his 3 up lead heading to the back nine.

Taylor hit an errant shot to the left on 10, hitting a tree and ending up in the mounds on the left side. He then proceeded to extract his ball from a difficult lie to 4 feet on the back of the 10th green. That 4 up lead was quickly erased when he failed to get up and down from just off the front of the 11th. He left himself 5 feet for birdie on 12 to regain the 4 up lead but missed. Both players made birdie on the short par 4 13th and then both 2 putted for par on the 14th. With the match on the line Wolfe 30 foot birdie putt lipped the cup and sailed 6 feet by. Taylor had a 15 foot birdie putt to end the match, which he did not convert but Wolfe was then unable to make his comeback putt which ended the match.

Taylor, a student at Dayton University played the round in 5 under par for the 15 holes played leaving Wolfe’s 1 under par effort far short of what he needed to keep up with the young Taylor.

Finals slated for 11am Sunday for EDGA Match Play

Posted: June 14th, 2025

Mike Wolfe is looking to defend his Match Play title and become the 6th player to do so, the last one being Drew Deimel in 2018-19. To do so he hopes to get off to a better start than he did in his semi-final match against Scott Klein. With two bogies of his own and a birdie by Klein, Wolfe was 3 down through 5 and as Klein stood over a 5 footer for birdie on 7, it looked like that deficit would go to 4. Klein’s putt hit the lip and Wolfe followed up that good break by taking the next 3 holes. A 20 footer for eagle secured the 8th hole, while Klein provided a little help with a 3 putt on 9 and then missed the green on 10 to square the match. Klein survived an errant tee shot on the 13th but then missed the next two greens, failing to save par on both holes allowing Wolfe to take a two up lead. Wolfe would return a hole with an errant tee shot on 16 but managed to halve the last two holes to claim the spot in the finals.

The other semi-final match got out of control quickly for 5-time Match Play Champion Ron Coleman. After tieing the first two holes, Coleman hit a poor bunker shot on the 3rd to lose the hole. Breckin Taylor hit his tee shot on 4 into the trees on the right but recovered with an excellent punch shot that stopped just 4 feet above the hole. Coleman had a birdie chance from about 10 feet that he was unable to convert allowing Taylor to move to 2 up with the short birdie putt. Coleman hit another poor bunker shot on the par 3 fifth giving Taylor a three up lead with a par. Taylor claimed a 4th hole in a row with a birdie on 6 and then added another birdie on the par 5 eighth to take complete control of the match with a 5 up lead. The two matched pars for the next 4 holes before Taylor claimed the 13th with a par to end the match.

The finals tee off at 11am on Sunday. Click here for complete results.
