With the season over, focus moves to 2024 Hall of Fame

Posted: August 31st, 2024

This year’s Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony is on Saturday, October 26th at Lake Shore Country Club with festivities beginning at 5:30.

The EDGA Hall of Fame represents a who’s who of Erie Golf, including both skilled players and long-time volunteers, people who started the organization and those who have helped it grow and continue to keep it going.

The first Hall of Fame induction was in 1951 when Truman Andrews was inducted. An induction was conducted every year thereafter through 1990 except for a few random years. In 1958 two brothers were inducted. Ceremonies became less frequent as there were only 3 more in the 1990’s, two in the 2000’s and two in the 2010’s. However, these ceremonies inducted several individuals. In 2022, 5 individuals were inducted bringing the hall to a total of 53 members.

The 2024 class will bring in 4 new members, raising that total to 57. Here are the members of this year’s class.

NORMAN GAYLORD

Norman, or “Normie” as he was called won the EDGA Amateur Championship for the first time in 1929. That was the first year the finals were 36 holes and he defeated 1926 champion Hubby Vogt to become the youngest champion at the time at 17 years of age. That same year he set the course record at Lawrence Park with 66. In 1931 he claimed his second title, this time taking down two-time and defending champion Johnny McCarthy. In 1933 he became the first three-time champion beating the 1932 champion Alex Holtz in the finale.

BOB PARIS

Bob is a familiar name in Erie golf circles. The highlight was his triumph in the 2001 EDGA Amateur Championship at Kahkwa in sudden death over Tom Amendola. It was his only EDGA major but he had a number of close calls, including a pair of runners-up and three thirds. From his win in 2001 through 2017, Bob never finished worse than 11th , a run that included 15 top tens. While never capturing the EDGA Match Play his run was equally impressive. From 1996 through 2014 he qualified for match play every year and only failed to win at least one match in those 19 events. 2001 was the only year he made it to the finals, falling to Joe Cassano, Jr. on the 18th hole. Bob also captured the first EDGA Mid Amateur in his stellar year of 2001 Bob holds 11 other EDGA titles, 6 of them partnering with his son Ryan in the Father-Son, three Senior Amateur titles and two partnering with Jim McKibben in the Streeter Cup. In 2010 Bob won the West Penn Senior Amateur and in 2013 claimed their Father-Son title with Ryan. Bob was inducted into the Metro Erie Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.

TIM DUNLAVEY

Tim began gathering titles at an early age winning three consecutive District 10 titles while at Cathedral Prep. Advancing to the state championships he finished third, second and then first in those three years. Also while still in high school he captured the EDGA Junior Match Play. It wasn’t much longer before he won an EDGA major winning the Amateur in later that fall at age 18. After a couple of thirds he added his second Amateur in 1989 and then backed that up with a third title in 1990. He was the first EDGA player to win three Amateurs in the stroke play era which began in 1961. He also captured two prestigious West Penn Amateurs. While at the University of Virginia, he won a collegiate title, was named All-ACC twice and competed in the NCAA championships in 1990. He turned professional in 1991 and was a full-time member of the PGA Nike Tour. He won 4 tournaments at the professional level and regained his amateur status in 2001 and has continued to compete at the USGA and state level. Tim was inducted into the Cathedral Prep Hall of Fame in 2006 and into the Metro Erie Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.

Rowane captures first EDGA Major

Posted: August 18th, 2024

Evan Rowane began the 104th EDGA Amateur with a front nine 4-under par 32 and was well on his way to the title. Well, it was a little early for that thought and through many ups and downs along the way, he ended up at that destination anyway, Champion of the 2024 EDGA Amateur. His biggest bumps we in completing that first round as 3 consecutive bogies dropped him from the lead to a tie for 4th with 71. In round 2 he made 3 bogies but offset them with 4 birdies and another 71. In the finale, he had just one bogey on each nine which were offset by 3 birdies including a title clinching 20 footer on the final green for a third 71 and a two stroke victory. Like Mike Wolfe in the 2024 Match Play, Evan is a first time major champion.

The leaderboard with tight throughout the entire final round with four different players finding their way to the top of the leaderboard. It was 4-time EDGA major champion Drew Deimel that took the most holes to find that spot. Of course, with a first round 80, he had the furthest distance to travel. A second round 67 moved him safely within the cut line and when he hit the 5-under mark in the 3rd round after a birdie on the par 3 fourteenth, he was tied for the lead. Playing several groups in front of the leaders he was hoping to post a number for them to chase, however, when he bogied the par 5 seventeenth, he was short of the mark he was hoping for, leaving Rowane needing only a par to win. He closed with 68, the low round of the day for the second day in a row and finished solo second at 1-under par. Deimel finished runner up last year as well, now bringing his runner up total to 4 with a lone victory in 2010.

Four players tied for third including the defending champion, Tyler Cozad. With a birdie on the par 5 thriteenth, he moved to 3-under and held a one stroke lead over both Rowane and Deimel. However, when his tee shot landed long and right on the par 3 fourteenth, par was unlikely and even a bogey was going to be difficult. He ended up carding a double bogey, falling out of the lead for good he finished at even par with 73. Alex Weir was also in that group. He began the round tied for the lead but fell back with a bogey on two after missing a short birdie attempt on one. He got that stroke back on 5 but consecutive bogies on 9, 10 and 11 put him too far behind. His 74 left him at even. Gannon freshman Mattia Parrini joined that group at even with 71’s in the first and last rounds. consecutive rounds of 71. 2021 Match Play champion Matt Barto filled out the foursome tied at even par. A bogey on 9 and a double on 10 derailed his run but closing birdies on 16 and 18 jumped him up to tied for 3rd.

First round co-leaders Mike Marsico and Sean Sculley ended up 7th and 8th respectively. Marsico followed his opening 69 with consecutive 74’s while Sculley closed with 74-75. His final round included all pars on the front and then just one par on a back nine that included an eagle, two birdies, one par, 3 bogies and 2 doubles.

Isaiah Swan and Rasmus Seppenen finished out the top then, tieing with a +4 total.

The top 15 finishers won a prize and those prizes can be redeemed in the pro shop at Lake View.

Packed Leaderboard Enters Final Round of Amateur

Posted: August 17th, 2024

Alex Weir (72-70) and Evan Rowane (71-71) enter tomorrow’s final round tied for the lead at 2 under par. Weir is no stranger to that position, having finished runner up in 2021 and 2022. In 2021, the last time the event was hosted by Lake View, he lost in a playoff. Rowane has been there before as well, making a run in 2019 at Downing on the back nine, ultimately finishing 3rd. Their playing partner for the final round is the defending champion, Tyler Cozad (72-71), who sits at one under par. Cozad has titles in 2017, 2019 and 2023 and is just the 6 player to attempt to capture a 4th EDGA Amateur. Only Ellery Tarbell accomplished that feat with his victory in 2011.

The penultimate group is right on their heels as two of those players are also at 1 under par. First round co-leader Mike Marsico (69-74) is one of those contenders. The 2024 Lawrence Park club champ is making his first appearance in the final round of the Amateur. Sean Sculley (69-74), another of the first round co-leaders is also at one under. He already owns an EDGA Major, the 2017 Match Play Championship. Sean’s best Am finish was 5th, the year before his Match Play title. They are joined by Matt Barto (76-69) who also owns a Match Play title (2022) and has a 4th place finish in 2020. Matt’s 69 was one of three sub 70 rounds on the day. 4-time EDGA Major Champion Drew Deimel follow up his round one 80 with a 5-under par 67 while Phil Pedano performed similarly, improving from 78 to 68. Pedano is 9th, Deimel 11th.

In addition to Barto at +1 is 2024 EDGA Match Play Champion Mike Wolfe and Gannon freshman Mattia Parrini. Wolfe has finished 3rd in the last 3 Am’s and also has a 2nd and 4th in 2018 and 2019. Completing the EDGA  Major double is rare, having only been accomplished 3 times, twice by Ron Coleman (2003 and 2007) and for the first time in 1976 by Dale Loeslein. Wolfe has that opportunity tomorrow.

The top 10 is rounded out by Pendano and Rasmus Seppanen, a Gannon junior. Both players are at +2.

The field was cut to the low 24 and ties. Those 27 players tee off tomorrow morning starting at 11:00am for their final 18 holes of this 54-hole championship.
