Carlotti bags 5th JC Martin Seniors Title
It appears that the Seniors like the opportunity to play events in back to back days. After competing in the Team at Lake Shore on Tuesday, most of the players traveled east to Downing on Wednesday for the JC Martin EDGA Senior Amateur Championship and several emerged with their second prize of the week.
Rick Carlotti came out on top but he had lots of company and a playoff was needed. Carlotti birdied 3 of the last 4 holes to card his 4-under par 68. He battled with his playing partners, David Hewett and Ron Coleman all morning and both of those players had an opportunity to post 69 with a birdie on the final hole. Neither did and with Rick being aware that Shawn Wallace, the Senior Team champ from the day before, had already posted 69, he still need to convert his 10 footer to take the clubhouse lead which he did.
But then he had to wait as new senior Ted Grassi III (this is just his second seniors event) was making a back nine charge. Even though Grassi birdied 10,12,13 and 14, Carlotti was still clinging to a two shot lead. However, Grassi made it 4-in-a-row with a birdie on 15 and then birdied 17 to match Carlotti’s total. When he was unable to birdie the closing hole the two headed to a playoff on Downing’s 10th to decide the title. Grassi found trouble off the tee and a lengthy approach still gave him a birdie look but when Carlotti dropped his approach to 3 feet, Grassi knew his putt was a must. He left it just short and after Carlotti drilled in the birdie putt ha had his 5th EDGA Seniors title, second most in EDGA History.
Overall low net was taken by Shawn Wallace, Grassi III took home the prize in the 50-59 age group, Hewett and Coleman tied for the 60-69 age group and the Super Seniors title went to Jim “Doc” Mahoney who shot 76.
