Posting another clean 9 which included a birdie on 3 and an eagle on 8, Drew Deimel stretched his lead to 6 shots heading to the back nine at Lawrence Park. That lead seemed almost insurmountable until the defending champion, Alex Weir started making birdies. With 4 on holes 10, 12, 13 and 15 he trimmed the lead to just two. At that point, with Deimel playing behind him, Drew made his first bogey of the event after missing the 14th green. He then followed that up with an errant drive that caused him to select an alternative route to the green through the 16th hole. That decision proved unwise and Deimel would end up making a double bogey and, as Weir parred the 16th, he was one stroke in front.

Weir could have taken control on the final two holes but missed a makeable birdie on 17 and then bogied 18 to bring the two back to even. Deimel had his own chances with great birdie opportnities on both of the final two holes. When he could not get either putt to fall, the two players headed to sudden death after 7-under par performances. Both player hit good tee shots and their approaches were similar, so much so that a measurement had to be taken to decide the order of play. Deimel putted first and hit the lip on the high side leaving Weir with a shot at the win from 12 feet. He converted that opportunity adding a second EDGA Amateur Championship to his resume.

Not to be lost in the mix was the 2024 EDGA Match Play Champ, Mike Wolfe, who finished just one shot out of the playoff. He was in contention all day but just couldn’t convert the birdies he needed when he had the opportunites. He birdied the 2nd and didn’t make another on until the 15th. He still had a chance on the closing hole but only managed a par.

Second Round Results

Drew Deimel opened with a first round 68 in the 2026 EDGA Amateur Championship at Lawrence Park GC which was good for a 2 stroke lead over defending champion Alex Weir and Ryder Grignol. He followed that up with a three under par round of 69 to extend his lead to 4 over a trio that includes Weir, Mike Wolfe and young Chase Recio.

Deimel, a 4-time major champion has returned two clean bogey free cards thus far. His opening round featured 4 birdies on holes 5, 10, 11 and 17 while Saturday’s round featured three on holes 7, 8 and 16. Deimel captured his only Amateur in 2010 and was well on his way to his second in 2012 where he carried a 6-shot lead into the final round only to see Ron Coleman snatch the title away with a final round 66.

After numerous close calls, Alex Weir finally bagged an EDGA title, taking the Amateur at his home course, Kahkwa, by a single shot over Michael Garcia. He currently sits tied second at three under par, tied with Wolfe and Recio. Wolfe had a number of close calls himself until he finally captured the 2024 Match Play, They are joined Chase Recio.

Four players are at one-under par, 6 shots back and that group includes the aforementioned Michael Garcia, another 4-time EDGA major champion Chris Kupniewski and Gannon’s Vincent Lenze.

The cut came at 5-over par 149 as the top 24 will return to Lawrence Park tomorrow for the finale.
