Deimel doubles his lead after 2nd Round of Am

Drew Deimel opened with a first round 68 in the 2026 EDGA Amateur Championship at Lawrence Park GC which was good for a 2 stroke lead over defending champion Alex Weir and Ryder Grignol. He followed that up with a three under par round of 69 to extend his lead to 4 over a trio that includes Weir, Mike Wolfe and young Chase Recio.

Deimel, a 4-time major champion has returned two clean bogey free cards thus far. His opening round featured 4 birdies on holes 5, 10, 11 and 17 while Saturday’s round featured three on holes 7, 8 and 16. Deimel captured his only Amateur in 2010 and was well on his way to his second in 2012 where he carried a 6-shot lead into the final round only to see Ron Coleman snatch the title away with a final round 66.

After numerous close calls, Alex Weir finally bagged an EDGA title, taking the Amateur at his home course, Kahkwa, by a single shot over Michael Garcia. He currently sits tied second at three under par, tied with Wolfe and Recio. Wolfe had a number of close calls himself until he finally captured the 2024 Match Play, They are joined Chase Recio.

Four players are at one-under par, 6 shots back and that group includes the aforementioned Michael Garcia, another 4-time EDGA major champion Chris Kupniewski and Gannon’s Vincent Lenze.

The cut came at 5-over par 149 as the top 24 will return to Lawrence Park tomorrow for the finale.
