Drew Deimel picked up right back were he left off after capturing the EDGA Match Play Championship at Lake View CC in June … on top. After the first round of the Amateur, however, he has lots of company.

Drew finished the opening round with a score of 70 that included 5 birdies and 3 bogies, a score that would leave him tied with Gannon University’s Abe Holmes. Holmes’ round included 6 birdies offset by 2 bogies and a double.

There are 7 player locked in a group at 1-under par 71 that includes Tyler Cozad, Sean Sculley, Mike Wolfe, David Nichols, Ryan Peters, Emmett Caskey and Evan Rowane. Cozad won the EDGA Amateur in 2018 while Sculley won the Match Play in 2017. Mike Wolfe is still seeking his first EDGA major, having finished runner-up in both EDGA majors in 2018.

The group at even par is nearly as big with Adrian Larsen, Brent Rodgers, Mark Majewski, Mike Newcomer, Pat Kelly and Ryan Deimel finishing with identical 72’s. Pat Kelly is the defending champion and looking to be the first to repeat since Ellery Tarbell’s titles in 2005-06. Ryan Deimel also has an EDGA Amateur title on his resume having captured the title in 2014.

Match Play runner up Matt Barto shot 73 along with Jake Angelucci and Jordan Henry. The top 20 is rounded out by Tarbell, Andrew Leek, Charlie Lichtenwalter and Zach Ford each of whom shot 74.

There was a little excitement today on Downing’s 197 yard par 3 fifth hole when Clayton Skoff scored and ace. The eagle propelled him to a round of 75 which is currently right on the cut line.

Round two takes place tomorrow when a cut to the top 24 will be made for the final 18 holes on Sunday. All play is at the Downing Golf Course.
