Hewett claims 39th EDGA Match Play

Posted: June 26th, 2011

HewettFinally, after 35 Match Play tournaments and 31 times in match play, David Hewett has finished the event holding the trophy. Sunday’s final match at Lawrence Park was well played by both players as Hewett, the 2000 EDGA Amateur champion claimed a 1up victory over Kahkwa’s Drew Deimel. Deimel won the EDGA’s last major, the 2010 Amateur at Lake Shore.

Both players began the match with birdies on number 1. After two pars, Hewett claimed the first lead of the match with a birdie on number 4. He extended that lead to 2 with a birdie on number 7 before Deimel’s birdie on 8 cut that lead in half. Both players made pars on the next three holes.

Deimel squared the match after Hewett failed to get it up and down on number 12. Both players would again par the next 3 holes. The final turning point came on 16 when Deimel hit the hole from 20 feet, the putt was just a bit too hard to stay in the hole. Hewett then drained his 10 footer for birdie and a one up lead.

Hole 17 was halved with pars. On the final hole both players faced about 30 footers for birdie. Hewett’s attempt just missed on the low side. When Deimel’s effort was unsuccessful Hewett tapped in for par and the victory. The final count was 70 for Hewett and 71 for Deimel.
