Finally, after 35 Match Play tournaments and 31 times in match play, David Hewett has finished the event holding the trophy. Sunday’s final match at Lawrence Park was well played by both players as Hewett, the 2000 EDGA Amateur champion claimed a 1up victory over Kahkwa’s Drew Deimel. Deimel won the EDGA’s last major, the 2010 Amateur at Lake Shore.
Both players began the match with birdies on number 1. After two pars, Hewett claimed the first lead of the match with a birdie on number 4. He extended that lead to 2 with a birdie on number 7 before Deimel’s birdie on 8 cut that lead in half. Both players made pars on the next three holes.
Deimel squared the match after Hewett failed to get it up and down on number 12. Both players would again par the next 3 holes. The final turning point came on 16 when Deimel hit the hole from 20 feet, the putt was just a bit too hard to stay in the hole. Hewett then drained his 10 footer for birdie and a one up lead.
Hole 17 was halved with pars. On the final hole both players faced about 30 footers for birdie. Hewett’s attempt just missed on the low side. When Deimel’s effort was unsuccessful Hewett tapped in for par and the victory. The final count was 70 for Hewett and 71 for Deimel.

Finals set for 39th Match Play at LP
Posted: June 25th, 2011
2000 Amateur Champion David Hewett (WW) will meet the 2010 Amateur Champion Drew Deimel (K) in the finals of the 39th Match Play Championship at Lawrence Park GC. The match begins at 11:00.
In the morning matches Hewett defeated Sal Vella, Jr. (LP) 4&3 while 4-time defending champion Ron Coleman (LV) took care of Bob Paris (LP) 5&3 extending his record match winning streak to 23. That streak, however, would end in the afternoon as Coleman matched swings with Hewett, a replay of the 2010 finals. Hewett turned the tables on Coleman, avenging a 4&3 loss last year with a 4&3 victory of his own and a second consecutive berth in the finals.
In the lower bracket Ted Grassi, III took care of fellow Park linkster, Evan Watkins 2up. Defending Amateur Champion Deimel was pushed to the limit by John Sherman (LP) with the match ending with a 1up victory for Deimel. In the afternoon Deimel eliminated Grassi, the last home course golfer standing. The final margin of victory for Deimel was 3&2.

Weather hinders Match Play
Posted: June 24th, 2011
Rain was a problem at Lawrence Park GC as the 39th EDGA Match Play was shortened to play of the second round. The quarter- and semi-finals will now be contested on Saturday with the quarter-final play beginning at 11:44 and the semi-finals following in the afternoon. The finals are still slated for mid-moring on Sunday.
Ron Coleman (LV), the 4-time defending champion, extended his match winning streak to 22 with a 6&4 victory over Mike Wolfe (LV). Coleman defeated Wolfe in the finals of the 2007 Match Play at Lake Shore. 2001 Amateur Champion Bob Paris (LP) advanced with a 5&4 victory over Corey Bowers (E) 5&4.
In a match of two Park members, Sal Vella, Jr. defeated Dave Spitzer 2&1 in what would be the closest match of the day. 2000 Amateur Champion David Hewett (WW) advanced to the next round, disposing of Jamie Neumaier 5&4.
Two blowouts kicked off the lower bracket as Evan Watkins (LP) dusted 2009 Senior Champ Rick Carlotti (LV) 7&6 while Ted Grassi, III (LP) defeated Mike Newcomer (LP) by that same 7&6 margin. John Sherman (LP) made it 5 LP members of the final 8 with a 3&2 victory over Kevin McDonald (LP). Defending Amatuer Champion Drew Deimel (K) rounds out the quarter-finalists, with a 3&2 win over 1986 Match Play Champion Tony Pepicello (WW).

Times set for Jr. Match Play Qualifier
Posted: June 22nd, 2011
The qualifier for the EDGA Junior Match Play is being conducted on Monday June 27th at Green Meadows GC. Tee times for the event are available. Click Here
Last year in a very well played match, Mike Kloecker of LP defeated Cameron Zbrzeznj of Erie 2 up in the finals of the EDGA Junior Match Play which was contested Friday June 25th at Gospel Hill GC.
The championship, which was a battle of the two low qualifiers, was filled with excitement and momentum swings. Zbrzeznj held a 2 up lead after 8 but lost the ninth to turn 1up. He would quickly rebound with a birdie on ten to regain his two up lead. He followed that up with an eagle 2 on the eleventh but, unfortunately that wasn’t good enough to gain a hole as BOTH players holed their second shots for eagle and the hole was halved. Kloecker then cut the lead in half with a birdie on 12. After a couple of tied holes Kloecker’s birdie on 15 squared the match.
Kloecker birdied again on 17 and held the lead playing the final hole. Zbrzeznj missed the 18th green and, when he failed to get it up and down the hole and the match were conceded to Kloecker.
In the first flight Alex Shindledecker clipped Nick Hayes 2 up.
