Deimel captures 90th EDGA Amateur
Matching the low round of the tournament, a 2 under par 70, Drew Deimel captured the 2010 EDGA Amateur Championship with a three round total of 218. Bob Paris finished second with 74-221, follwed by Rob Nicotra 75-222 and overnight leader Dave First 78-224. Three were tied for fifth at 225, Ted Grassi III 72-225, David Spitzer 75-225, and Joe Cassano 77-225. Rick Carlotti was alone in 8th with 72-226 while Ellery Tarbell and Dave Antolik rounded out the top ten with 75-227′s.
It was certainly an eventful finish to say the least. Deimel, a group in front of the leaders was 4-under par for the day heading into 15. A bogey there, however, coupled with Nicotra’s amazing birdie on 14 would put Nicotra 2 in front. His drive on 15 was quite a bit to the right. His second ended up in the cross bunker. From their over the green and two chips and a putt later the two were even with three to play. Deimel made a nice birdie on 16 which Nicotra was unable to match. Deimel played 17 solidly, making par which, at the time left him one in front. Nicotra however, hit another tee shot right into the trees this time being unable to find his ball. His 4th shot came up short and his bid for double bogey ended up in a lip out, all but sealing the event for Deimel.
Deimel had problems of his own on 18 as a poor chip and three putts lead to a finishing double bogey. Nicotra, however could do little about it as he hit a poor pitch himself and matched Deimel’s 3-putt double. Along the way Bob Paris, never really in the fray on the back nine continued to play steady to the end and ended up solo second, one shot in front of Nicotra, 3 back of Deimel.
