Zach Bird captures Junior Stroke

Posted: August 5th, 2009

Zach Bird succeeds his younger brother Nick as champion of the Jim Martin Memorial EDGA Junior Stroke Play.

Zach quickly erased a two shot deficit when first round leader Greg Podufal made a double bogey on the second hole. Bird would then use birdies on 7 and 8 to take the lead at the turn by 2. Podufal then birdied 10 and 11 to again forge a tie before Bird returned the favor by birdieing the 12th. Both would par the final 6 holes leaving Bird with a one shot advantage. Bird ended with 68-139, Podufal 71-140.

Whispering Woods’ Cameron Zbrzeznj match Bird’s 68 for low round of the day, his two day total of 141 was good for third. Meanwhile, Junior Match Play champion Evan Watkins, after a slow start on the front, made birdies on 8, 10, 11, 12, and 13 to get to even par and just one off the lead but a double on 15 ended his hopes of the EDGA Junior “double.” He finished with an even par 70 and a two day total of 142 and finished 4th.

Garrett Rodgers 73-146, Robert Duran 75-148, Defending Champion Nick Bird 73-150 and Jimmy Lasher 74-150 rounded out the top 8 and all received prizes for their efforts.

Other age group prizes went to:
