Coleman makes EDGA History

Posted: June 3rd, 2009

Now he’s the first “Three-time” defending champion as Ron Coleman became the first player in EDGA history to capture an EDGA Major title (Amateur or Match Play) title in 3 consecutive years. This was also Ron’s 6th major (4 match – 2003, 07, 08 and 09) and 2 amateur, 2003 and 07) tieing him with Tom Amendola, Dave Ciacchini and Brett Kieffer for the record.

There previously have been 2 repeat match play champions, Ed Podufal in 84-85 and Don Fessler, Jr., in 95-96. In the Amateur there have been 9 repeat champions, Ellery Tarbell (2005-06), Joe Cassano (93-94), Tim Dunlavey (89-90), Brett Kieffer (80-81), Gene George (74-75), Dave Hambly (65-66), Harold Cloyd (42-43), Lou Geisler (40-41), and W.W. Fisher (27-28).

The match was fairly closely contested on a beautiful summer day at Lake View CC. Coleman would use back-to-back birdies on each 9 the change the momentum of the match. On the front he birdied no’s 5 & 6 to turn a 1 hole deficit into a 1 hole lead and then on the back would use birdies on no’s 13 and 14 to move the match to dormie and basically take it out of Grassi’s reach with 4 holes to play. Grassi played steady as he has all week but could only muster 2 holes, both Coleman 3-putts. Coleman finished his 15 holes at 2-under par.

The finals’ scorecard :

RC – 6 4 4 3 3 4 3 5 4 – 36 4 4 3 4 2 4 (wins 4&3)
TG – 5 4 5 3 4 5 3 4 4 – 37 4 5 3 5 3 4
