Skelton takes Jr. Match Title
Consistency powered Corry’s Tom Skelton to the title in the EDGA Junior Match Play Championship on Friday.
Garrett Rodgers was 2 up through seven holes at Elk Valley before Skelton played the final 11 holes in even par to rally for a one-up win.
After Rodgers, a 14-year-old freshman at General McLane, scored a tap-in birdie on the par-4 seventh hole, Skelton took over. Skelton, a 17-year-old senior at Corry, registered routine par on the par-3 eighth hole and scrambled for a par 4 on the 10th hole to even the match. Two more routine pars on the 13th and 14th holes gave him a lead that he never relinquished.
After Skelton missed a 6-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th hole that would have ended the match, Rogers made a 4-foot birdie putt to cut Skleton’s lead to 1 up. But they halved the final hole that enabled Skelton to earn his first EDGA championship.
Ricky Majewski, a 16-year-old junior at Mercyhurst Prep, defeated Evan Watkins, a 15-year-old sophomore at McDowell, 3 and 2 to win the first flight title.
